A track runs the length of the strap in small steps. You pull to the exact point that feels right and it holds there, which is the difference between a belt that fits and a belt that is one hole too tight or one hole too loose.

The Part That Decides It

The pawl inside the buckle, the small tooth that drops into the track. It carries the whole load every time you sit down. On a cheap ratchet belt it is soft zinc, it rounds off after a few months, and from then on the belt clicks and slips instead of holding.
